The co-creator of Friends has responded to a dark fan theory which claimed that the sitcom was the 'meth-addled fantasy of a homeless Phoebe as she stared through the window of Central Perk'.

The theory, that has previously gone viral, suggested: "All 10 seasons were merely her fevered imagination, projecting herself into the lives of the others. All she ever wanted was... Friends."

However 60-year-old American writer and TV producer Marta Kauffman has hit out at fans over the theory.

She told ET Online: "That's the saddest thing I've ever heard.

"That's a terrible theory. That's, like, that's like crazy alt-television theory. Wow.

"I just think that someone needs a life. Someone needs a life, that's all I'm saying."

That isn't the only wild theory that fans have put out about the show, it's previously been suggested that fictional character Joey Tribbiani is a real person due to the appearance of Brent Spiner, who played Data in Star Trek.

According to a post on Digital Spy, Spiner appeared in season 10 of Friends as the boss who interviews Rachel for a job at Gucci in 2004.

He then appeared the next year as himself on spin-off show Joey - a show set in the same universe.

Spiner appears on Joey as himself (not a character), while he is in the role of James Campbell in Friends.

The theory claims that because Spiner played himself in Joey, but played a character on Friends, then the same is true for Joey Tribbiani.

It therefore suggests that the Joey spin-off show is not fiction but reality, and the people in Joey then play characters in Friends.

It's all pretty confusing right?

No doubt Marta Kauffman would have strong words to say about that as well.
