Comedians across the world were devastated when they heard one of their mates, Charlie Murphy, had died.

One of his closest friends was Dave Chappelle. The duo collaborated heavily for the Chappelle's Show where Charlie had his own segment: 'Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories'.

So to pay tribute to his mate, Dave got on stage with John Mayer during his concert in Ohio. Mayer and Chappelle have also worked together on Dave's show with a skit called White People Can't Dance.

After reminiscing about their work together, Dave told the crowd: "Today I got some terrible news, my good friend Charlie Murphy passed away this morning and everybody in comedy is heartbroken.

"John, there was a night four years ago when we were at a hotel cafe in LA, you were doing a show for 120 people, you went to the piano and you sang a song and the song that you sang that night reminded me of my friend Charlie Murphy. Our friend Charlie Murphy."

Then Dave asked if John could play his beautiful and touching song 'You're Going To Live Forever In Me' in tribute to Charlie.

Just before the song began, Dave said: "Rest in peace Charlie murphy we love you, we love your comedy, we love your stories and we love your spirit."

Charlie was well-known as Eddie Murphy's older brother, but was also successful in his own right.

According to Charlie's manager, he died from leukaemia Wednesday morning in a New York hospital.

Prior to his death he had been going undergoing chemotherapy to treat the illness and it was thought he was on the road to recovery.

TMZ have claimed that family would call him frequently, and he'd even joke they were calling too much.

Charlie also co-wrote some of Eddie Murphy's movies, such as Norbit and Vampire in Brooklyn.

He co-starred in Are We There Yet?, The Boondocks and Black Jesus.

Murphy's wife, Tisha Taylor Murphy, died in 2009 after a battle with cancer.

The couple married in 1997 and had two kids together: daughter Ava and son Xavier and Murphy also had another child from a previous relationship.

RIP, a comedy legend.
