Avatar writer and director James Cameron has admitted that he might have 'over written', having penned five installments for the film series.

The Oscar-winning writer and director of Titanic and The Terminator has been talking about making more Avatar films since the release of the first.

A second, third, fourth and fifth film have been supposed to be coming to a cinema near you for almost a decade, yet even the first sequel is yet to materialise.

The first sequel, known as Avatar 2 at this early stage, is set to arrive in December 2018, followed by Avatar 3 in December 2020, Avatar 4 in December 2022 and Avatar 5 in December 2023. But considering it took decades for the first one to come out, we have to say it's probably unlikely that will actually happen

Speaking about the films to Variety, he said: "The Avatar story arc was originally meant to be a trilogy, but I overwrite and my writers overwrote as well.

"But basically the first of the sequels cloned itself and became two films, so now it's four films, and the studio's very happy with it. They have an opportunity to make more money but it's also an opportunity to spend a lot more money, too, so there's a clench factor."

Cameron's first Avatar, released in 2009, became the highest-grossing film of all time, making a whopping $2.8billion at the global box office. At the time, people loved it because 3D was a novelty, although the plot has been criticised for being simplistic.

Then again, I was a fan. So, sort it out, James, get them released!
