Disney has announced the cast for its live-action Guy Ritchie-directed remake of Aladdin.

Mena Massoud will play Aladdin in the film and London-born Power Rangers' star Naomi Scott will play Jasmine. Disney also confirmed that Will Smith will play Genie.

Relatively unknown, Massoud is also set to star in the upcoming Jack Ryan TV series, so the movie will be a big step in his career.

Smith had long been rumoured to be taking the role made famous by Robin Williams in the 1992 cartoon.

The cast was officially confirmed at the Disney D23 Expo in California today.

Here's how Twitter reacted to the big news:

The remake will be similar to Beauty and the Beast which was released a few weeks ago. It's proved to be quite the money-making machine and has pulled in more than a billion dollars worldwide.

Movie technology has advanced to the point where film makers can finally bring to life what many of us grew up with as cartoons. There have been plenty movies that have been remade for a new generation.

You've got Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella and The Jungle Book. People can also get excited for Mulan, which is set to be released next year.
