It's been about four decades since Atari launched its video game console which set the tone for the likes of Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo. The last console that the company put out was the Jaguar in 1993, but it was taken off shelves three years later.

But now they're back.

Atari CEO Fred Chesnais has remained coy about the details, only telling VentureBeat at the Electronic Entertainment Expo: "We're back in the hardware business."

He was being dogged by questions after a short video was released before the expo. While many people thought it was fake - there was a sneaking suspicion that this was the news that Atari fans the world over have been waiting for. Check it out here:

The only detail that Chesnais has revealed is that the console would be based on PC technology, but it'll be interesting to see how they plan on beating the big competitors.

There have been some mixed feelings about the new console on social media.

Atari developed a range of arcade games in the 1970s, including Computer Space and the legendary Pong. The Atari 2600 debuted in North America in 1977 and as of 2004, a whopping 30 million units had been sold.

Nine games were released with the wood-veneer panel console, like Outlaw, Space War, Breakout and Pac-Man.

After the failure of its last console, Atari turned its sights to video games. In 2001, a company called Infogames used Atari as a brand name to launch games such as V-Rally 3, Neverwinter Nights, Stuntman and Enter the Matrix. Eleven years later, Atari had to file for bankruptcy, but was lifted out of the red once it invested in the social casino gaming industry.

There's been no date set for the new Atari console, so we'll just have to play the waiting game on this one.
