Doctors and nurses ran from a nearby hospital to help the injured following today's terror attack in Westminster it has emerged tonight.

NHS staff at St Thomas' Hospital, which is adjacent to Westminster, despatched from their workstations not knowing whether doing do would mean risking their own lives.

Dr Jeeves Wijesuriya, a junior doctor from London who specialises in general practice, told BuzzFeed News he had been attending an interview nearby when the incident happened.

"I heard the screaming so ran to help and the police ran me in," he said.

"Hems [helicopter emergency services], paramedics and police were incredible as we tried to save both the officer and the assailant.

"We spent some time trying to resuscitate them both."

Images taken at the scene of the attack show hospital staff attending to casualties, nurses piling up blankets to distribute to those involved in the attack.

They have been described on social media as 'heroes', willing to risk their own safety to save the lives of others.

Delivering a speech tonight Prime Minister Theresa May also praised the exceptional bravery of police and security services who ran towards the danger as they encouraged others to move away.

At least four people have been confirmed dead, including a police officer and the suspected attacker, after a 4x4 vehicle mowed down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before a knife attack in the grounds of the Houses of Parliament.

In the aftermath of the incident, people took to social media from across the globe to share their support and solidarity using a London underground icon and the hashtag #wearenotafraid.
