A teen with a rare form of cancer is able to start pioneering new treatment thanks to a £50,000 donation from X-Men star James McAvoy.

Ex-Shameless star James donated the money to Kelly Turner's online fundraising page shortly after visiting her in hospital last week.

Alongside his donation James wrote: "I hope this helps you achieve your goal sooner rather than later. Good luck luv James."

And it seems to have done just that, because to begin treatment Kelly needed £408,000 and, thanks in part to James' donation, she is now able to go ahead with the surgery, as her current total stands at £463,070, Kent Online reports.

Her family set up a justgiving page to help pay for the treatment, which is currently not available on the NHS- they are hoping to raise £1 million in total.

Kelly was just 15 when she and her family were given the devastating news that she had a desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) an aggressive tumor.

As well as the surgery in New York she will also have immunotherapy and radiotherapy to complete the treatment.

Kelly has previously undergone nine rounds of chemotherapy, and now wants to fly to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York for further treatment in hopes to beat the disease.

Generous celebrities

James is far from the only celebrity to reach out with such a kind donation. Late last year comedian Peter Kaye raised almost £150,000 to help fund treatment for a woman who was battling cancer.

A friend of Polly Haydock, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in October 2015 and was told in July that she had just six months to live, to ask if he would attend their local pub as part of a fundraiser.

But instead she received a phone call from Peter and he said: "I've got a better; I'll put these two nights on." What an absolute legend.

He appeared for two sell-out nights in Blackpool Opera House and raised almost £150,000 for Polly to undergo revolutionary treatment in Germany.

High-trouser sporting, reality TV judge Simon Cowell, also put his hand into his pocket and donated £25,000 after he was touched by the story of three-year-old Kian Musgrove who was battling cancer.

Little Kian was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and needed to get specialist treatment in the US which would cost £500,000. After hearing the story Simon donated £25,000 as well as putting up the cash for flights and accommodation to New York, which he also organised for the family.

Speaking to the Mirror at the time Kian's mum, Kat said: "His generosity is absolutely amazing, it is so heartwarming.

"We will be forever grateful for his help and his part in our life-saving journey.

"I would like to thank everyone who has been a pat of helping in any way at all, it really does mean the world to us. That kindness has kept us going and now we are finally on the way."

See, he's not all bad.
