The Bookmakers Reckon There’s A Good Chance Of A White Christmas

Could this be the year?

I don't know about you, but beside getting completely smashed and eating a much food as humanly possible, one of the things I look forward to most around the festive season is the possibility of a white Christmas. The kind Bing Crosby sang about. The kind you see in all the seasonal films. The kind everyone wants each year and rarely seems to happen.

Well, maybe this could be the year, with bookmakers slashing the odds of a white Christmas as the UK faces a cold snap in the coming days.

The Met Office says there is a chance of snow falling in the UK on December 25 in its latest predictions this weekend.

Although weather models will be updated closer to the day, the latest outlook says 'some snow' could be expected over high ground in the north.

In a statement posted yesterday, the Met Office said: "High pressure is likely to dominate from mid December, with fairly 'blocked' conditions becoming established across the UK.

"This weather pattern would lead to drier than average conditions and lighter winds.

"Interludes of more unsettled weather are expected to be fairly limited, although these could still lead to some snow over high ground in the north.

"It is likely to be rather a cold period, with temperatures below average for the time of year, and a continued risk of overnight frosts.

"Whilst it may be relatively mild at times, temperatures on the whole through this period are likely to be below average."

Ladbrokes is now offering odds of 2/1 for a white Christmas in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, with better odds as you head south, with 3/1 for Newcastle and Belfast, 4/1 for London, and 5/1 for Liverpool and Manchester. Cardiff and Birmingham come in at 6/1.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: "Winter's coming, and the odds are falling as quick as the temperature's dropping, leaving punters already dreaming of a White Christmas."

Furthermore, we could also be in with a very chilly time next week with the likelihood of temperatures falling below -10c somewhere in the UK at evens.
