A truck driver saved lads from being attacked whilst driving his 44-tonne truck through traffic in Tipton in the West Midlands.

Sean Swan, from Glasgow, broke up the fight in which the young boy was punched and held in a choke as teenage thugs tried to steal his bike.

He spotted the brutal attack at around 8.45am yesterday and seconds later he sprang into action, leaping out his cabin to sprint 20 yards across the road. He then intervened and stopped the assault.

"The young guy was being held from behind his neck in a choke hold while another lad sucker punched him - he had no means of defending himself," Sean said.

"The third was trying to nick his bike. At first I thought they were just messing around but when the punch came I knew they weren't.

"I was thinking that if this happened to my boy when he was older I really hope someone would help him.

"I don't know whether it's a Glaswegian thing or not, all I remember is not having the time to ring the police."

Describing the footage of his actions, filmed on Wood Green Road, Sean said the young boy was being thrown around 'like a rag doll'.

"I said to them, ''take your hands off, it's three on one' - it's wrong," he said. "They were quite threatening, were swearing at me and asked why I was getting involved. I just gave them my best Glasgow bark.

"The lad then attempted to get his bike back but ended up in the middle of them again so I grabbed him by the jumper and made sure he was stood behind me to keep him safe.

"I was really disgusted and disappointed that people did nothing, they didn't even dial 999 - shame on them."

After the three alleged attackers moved off Sean took the boy back to his lorry and his friend returned.

"He was white and shaking - the colour had drained out of him. He took two punches and had been held in a choke hold - he was very thankful that I helped him," said the lorry driver.

"I left my details in case the police needed to speak to me and a female family friend arrived and took him to safety.

"I couldn't have stood by and done nothing - it just seems to be the way I was brought up.

"My partner said I was lucky they didn't have a knife. I said that even if they had I would have still done it."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We have received a report and enquiries are under way."
