It pays to check your coins.

A homeless man who was begging in Exeter's city centre was handed a rare 50p coin worth hundreds of pounds. Nice.

The unnamed man was sat outside a Greggs for hours in the freezing temperatures and was asking for spare change from passers-by.

Begging is illegal in the UK, meaning the man was approached by police officers who asked him to move on. While talking to the officers, the man said he had been passed a 50p piece and wanted to check if it was one of the rare ones, the Exeter Express and Echo reports.

The policemen checked on his phone and found that the 50p was one of small run of coins launched to honour Beatrix Potter and that they were selling online for around £400.

When released last year, the coins were so popular they sold out in just over a week. The special-edition coloured ones were originally for sale for £55 new, but they now sell for hundreds on eBay.

I don't know about you guys but I am going to be checking every single coin I get my hands on from now on.
