If you think you have what it takes to be the next James Bond then there's big news: MI6 is set to recruit a thousand new staff by 2020, as it expands its surveillance operations.

The spying agency says expanding staff from just over 2,500 to 3,500 is necessary because of developments in technology and the Internet.

Although no public announcement has been made, BBC Newsnight has used confidential sources to confirm there will be a 40 percent increase in staff - which in my view doesn't really bode well for an agency that's built around secrecy.

One of the biggest challenges modern surveillance agencies face is how to operate covertly in an age where almost everybody leaves traces of their past on the Internet. Facial recognition technology also means images can be easily reverse searched to find pictures posted online by spies under their real identity.

At Washington DC on Tuesday, Alex Younger, the chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, alluded to challenges that face modern espionage.

"The information revolution fundamentally changes our operating environment," he said.

"In five years' time there will be two sorts of intelligence services - those that understand this fact and have prospered, and those that don't and haven't.

"And I'm determined that MI6 will be in the former category."

Get putting your CV together then lads. By the sounds of it, they'll be recruiting very soon.
