The title of the next chapter in the Star Wars saga has been revealed; it will be called Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.

It is scheduled for release December 15, 2017.

The film will feature the recently deceased Carrie Fisher, alongside saga veteran Mark Hamill and Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and others.

Director J.J. Abrams was the man put in charge of laying the groundwork for episode VII, though after directing The Force Awakens the reigns have been handed over to Rian Johnson. Abrams will be staying on as an executive producer and creative consultant for the franchise.

Scenes that required shooting at Skellig Michael in Ireland were filmed during pre-production in September 2015, with principal photography beginning at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom in February 2016 and ending in July 2016.

Prior to the announcement of the film's name it had been the source of much speculation amongst fans; a Croatian fan site had claimed to have unearthed a scoop on the title, claiming it will be Star Wars: The Order of the Dark Side.

WRONG!!

Needless to say there was a big fan reaction to the announcement...

A lot of people have been speculating on who the 'last Jedi' might be and, shock horror, the Luke Skywalker character could be about to be killed off. At a recent event in London Mark Hamill made a comment about Star Wars saying "I finish Episode VIII, and then I'm out of work," which could note bode well for the actor.

There again 'Jedi' is plural as well as singular (like sheep) meaning there could be multiple 'last Jedi', I guess it's all speculation until we get to see the movie in the cinema.
