Why Do We Get Earwax? Because Humans Are Gross, That's Why

Don't read this if you're eating.

Humans, generally, are pretty fucking gross. Over my 25 years on this planet, I've witnessed some toe-curling stuff. I once watched a kid pick a bogey out of his nose, and watched as the string of snot between his nose and his finger grew and grew until he seemed satisfied and wrapped it round his finger and ate it.

I nearly just puked at my desk reliving that, but it happened.

When I was a kid, I went through a brief period of biting my toenails and spitting them out. See? We're gross.

The thing is though, the body is naturally pretty minging. But at the same time, it's beautiful. Because it does all this stuff for you with the sole intention of keeping you safe and alive. Thanks, body!

Have you ever wondered how and why we get earwax? Yeah, sure... it's to keep the ears clean, right?

Empuze have uploaded a pretty cool video which explains the whole thing to you.

But wait, dancing Charlie from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Don't get too excited.

It's gross.

So what did we learn? Well, ear wax is made up of fatty acids and cholesterol. So if you're one of the gross people who eats their ear wax (NO SERIOUSLY, I'VE SEEN THAT HAPPEN TOO) then stop. It ain't worth it, bro.

But why do we need it?! The video says: "[We need it] because our ears hear things through vibrations like music passing through them.

"Ears aren't really big, so essentially what you get is a build up of dust, debris and dead skin cells and it's pretty dangerous because you can stop hearing things.

"But the wax actually comes and pushes these things out, it cleans your ear and acts as your defence which is pretty cool. It's disgusting but it's good."

Yum.
