Why did Paige retire from WWE?

Paige originally suffered an injury during a six-woman tag match after she took a hard kick to the back of the head from co-star Sasha Banks. After the kick, Paige fell to the ground clutching her right arm and medics ran to her aid. The match was cancelled soon after and a stretcher was brought to the side of the ring, with Paige needing help to get out the ring.

Despite looking innocuous at the time, she took to Twitter to confirm that she had spinal stenosis which meant that she was forced to retire from the ring.

Paige was one of WWE's biggest stars prior to her neck injury.

What does she do now?

Since retiring from the ring, the two-time WWE Divas Champion has continued to thrive in the wrestling business by transforming herself into an authority figure and tag team manager. Her story was even made into a film. On 29 December 2018, she reminisced about the event that changed her life forever.

She said on Instagram: "One year ago today. Crazy how time flies. I bounced back from rock bottom, came back and took a big knock in my wrestling career, had my whole come back brought to a halt. I was pretty down. But not out. I knew at this moment my career as a in ring competitor was over. But I wasn't gonna give up. @wwe took care of me and gave me the best job as GM and I loved every moment of it and look forward to what they have in store for me next. I miss wrestling everyday but I have some incredible things to come in 2019. More to come from @thesarayastore with clothes and cosmetics, A MOVIE ABOUT MY LIFE?!!! What the fuhhhh?!! And having someone very special and incredible to bring the new year in with and go on adventures with. I'm very fortunate, even after a lot of unfortunate circumstances. I'm the happiest and healthiest I've ever been! Pretty cool huh."

Mental health

As well as being banished to the sidelines for months on end, she also had sexually explicit clips of herself leaked on the internet - an ordeal that left her feeling 'broken' and 'collapsing with exhaustion'. Things got so bad that she even contemplated suicide.

In an episode of former WWE ring announcer Lilian Garcia's podcast, Paige said: "That scarred me, just people invading my privacy, to the point where sometimes I don't want to go out. People are just looking at me bad.

"I was out yesterday with my friend. We were just sitting there having a Bloody Mary. This guy comes up to my friend and says 'that's the porn star'."

Bursting into tears, Paige then continued to give a heartbreaking account about her darkest thoughts during the leak.

She said: "When they came out I barricaded myself in the house for a couple of months. I was so sad to the point I was contemplating suicide.

"I was on the floor, I was so low. I got so skinny and ended up collapsing with exhaustion in hospital in England. They told me at the time it was like stress-induced anorexia.

"I wasn't eating, I wasn't sleeping, I lost all my hair. I have clippings right now but I literally have no hair because my hair fell out, because I was so stressed.

"It just broke my heart. I was like 'why would someone want to do that to someone?'."

The former WWE Divas champ also said she was 'young and dumb' but didn't want to be known for the mistakes she'd made.

Despite officially retiring from the ring, Paige continues to be one of WWE's biggest names and greatest ambassadors.
