He also said the wall would be part fence.

Donald Trump used his first televised interview since becoming president-elect Trump to urge his supporters to stop beleaguering minorities.

Speaking on 60 Minutes, he said: "I am so saddened to hear that," when he was told that Latinos and Muslims had been facing harassment.

"And I say, 'Stop it'. If it - if it helps, I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: 'Stop it'."

In recent days, there have been a number of race-related crimes across the US, particularly in schools.

Trump used the interview to reiterate his tough stance on immigration as he pledged to, "get the people that are criminals and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers. We are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate." He said that the number of undocumented immigrants that fit into this category is likely to be two or three million.

When asked about whether he would be reversing the same-sex marriage law, where it is currently legal to get married, he said he had no plans to and that he was 'fine' with it.

However, he did promise to appoint judges who oppose abortion rights and those against restrictions on gun rights. If the law to legalise abortion was overturned, the decision on whether to ban it would go back to the individual states; when asked what this would mean for women in states that would ban abortions, he said, "perhaps they'll have to go to another state."

He also looks set to make a u-turn on the Affordable Care Act - known as Obamacare. In the past Trump has always said he would repeal the act, but since meeting Obama he appears to have had a change of heart. He has now suggested that he would like to keep some elements, including banning insurance companies from denying cover for pre-existing conditions and allowing people under 26 to remain on their parent's insurance.

And, of course, he was asked about the wall, "there could be some fencing," he said, before adding that in certain areas a wall would be more appropriate.
