German Vice-Chancellor Says Young Britons Should Be Offered Dual Citizenship

Nice one.

The German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel has said British people living in Germany should have the right to dual citizenship.

Sigmar's comment have come after thousands of young people voiced their feelings of uncertainty in the wake of the Brexit vote.

The Vice-Chancellor who also serves as the country's Economy Minister said Germany should offer citizenship to young Britons living in the country because it was largely older voters who voted to leave the European Union.

Speaking at a meeting with the Social Democratic Party in Berlin on Saturday he said the UK's referendum was a further reason to campaign to relax the rules on dual citizenship in Germany.

"Let us offer it to young Britons who live in Germany, Italy or France, so they can remain European Union citizens in this country," he said.

German law currently requires that those applying for citizenship must relinquish their old citizenship, whereas the UK allows its citizens to have dual citizenship.

Sigmar said that the EU referendum, which split the UK in terms of area and age range, provides good reason to consider citizenship on a case by case basis.

"That's why we shouldn't just pull up the drawbridge," he added. "Europe is the best place in the world for freedom, democracy and the chance of social progress."

In the referendum on 23 June the UK voted to leave the EU, with 51.9% in favour of leaving and 48.1% supporting Remain.

Recent opinion polls suggest as many as 67 per cent of voters aged 18-24 said they felt "angry" about the Brexit result, with more than 70 per cent of young people overall having voted to remain in the EU last month.

Yesterday thousands of people, including many young people, gathered in London in order to protest against the Brexit vote in London.

However not all young people are unhappy at Brexit, millennial voice Josh Teal wrote for TheLADbible criticising the 'Remainers' Revolt' for being "about as stupid and regressive as it gets."

Either way, it would be good if British people out there could claim dual citizenship, so they could be certain they are fine to remain in EU countries after Britain does leave.
