Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to respond to Barack Obama's claim that he could have beaten the Republican candidate in the US presidential election had it been a head-to-head race.

President Obama was prohibited by law from running for a third term, meaning Hillary Clinton was put forward as the Democratic candidate in this year's vote.

Obama told his former senior advisor, David Axelrod, on his podcast, The Axe Files, that he believed his vision of a 'tolerant and diverse and open' America could have garnered enough votes for yet another victory.

"I'm confident that if ... I had run again and articulated it, I think I could've mobilised a majority of the American people to rally behind it," Obama said.

Needless to say, this pissed off president-elect Trump, who took to Twitter to respond with his usual verbosity and razor-sharp wit.

He wrote: "President Obama said that he thinks he would have won against me. He should say that but I say NO WAY! - jobs leaving, ISIS, OCare, etc."

He then added: "The world was gloomy before I won - there was no hope."

President Obama is yet to offer a response.

Trump also took the opportunity to praise his Donald J. Trump charity, which he has announced he is shutting down to 'avoid even the appearance of any conflict with my role as president' and vowing to 'continue to pursue my strong interest in philanthropy in other ways'.

The Washington Post has reported that, according to charity records, Trump hasn't contributed anything to his charity since 2008.
