Man Will Face Court After Under Sevens Rugby Match Turns Violent

Man Will Face Court After Under Sevens Rugby Match Turns Violent

Yikes.

It can be slightly embarrassing when you're six or seven years old, trying to enjoy a good game of footy and your dad is absolutely tearing shreds off the referee from the side line.

"How much are they paying you, ref?" and "Maybe you should go to Specsavers, you wanker," are some of my personal favourites.

The game usually finishes and everyone goes home with their health, pride and dignity intact. But for one group of supporters that is simply not the case, it's not just a game of footy.

Police had to be called after parents in southern Sydney began arguing, throwing chairs and shoving each other. The scuffle broke out at Renown Reserve in Oatley during the match between Kogarah Cougars junior rugby league team and the Kingsgrove Colts.

It all started when the referee decided to give a penalty to one of the teams. Footage shows a group of parents getting up close and personal, with spectators claiming everyone else 'was pretty scared'.

Kingsgrove Colts President Leba Abihana has told Channel 7: "Obviously it's disappointing, junior rugby league isn't about what happened yesterday. I'm sure the junior league and NSW rugby will work through it and rectify whatever happened and make sure it doesn't happen again."

A NSW police statement said: "As a result of inquiries, a 37-year-old man was issued a Court Attendance Notice for offensive behaviour.

"He is due to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday 8 August 2017."

New South Wales Rugby League chief executive David Trodden has told the Daily Mail: "Junior sport is to be enjoyed by its young participants, not spoiled by inappropriate behaviour."

It's not the first time a brawl has been sparked off the field during a kids rugby match. One incident last year, also in Sydney's south, erupted during an under 12s match between the Bankstown Bulls and the St George Dragons.

It kicked off after a player got injured in the second half and several Dragons parents allegedly began shouting at Bulls coach Robert Mehrez. That sparked a brawl between about 20 people, before Mehrez is reported to have punched a 75-year-old man who was trying to break up the fight.

Four men from the Mehrez family, aged between 27 and 62, were arrested and charged with a variety of offences.

Ahmed Mehrez told police on the day: "All I remember is my son, 10 people holding him down and punching him and I get in, too. That's it."

But Magistrate Eve Wynhausen told him in court: "That's your explanation for why you got involved but it is not an excuse. All parties before the court should be ashamed of their behaviour."

Come on, guys, it's just a game.
