Money expert Martin Lewis is urging all Vodafone customers to check their bills and bank statements after the company was fined millions of pounds for making mistakes with accounts.

Ofcom charged the communications giant £4.6 million for breaking the rules it should adhere to when dealing with clients. It was also found that it misled people who had pay-as-you-go accounts, resulting in them being charged for top-ups that they never received.

Vodafone is the most complained about mobile phone provider in the UK.

It has claimed that the problems were down to a change in the computer system it uses - blame IT, classic - which would have affected 28.5 million customers.

On his website, Martin Lewis writes that he had already received thousands of complaints from angry punters, but, because not everyone checks their bills each month, there's probably even more people out there who are out of pocket and don't even realise it.

On the moneysavingexpert.com website it states that as well as not adding credit to accounts, it had also set up direct debits incorrectly, put people on the wrong tariff and was guilty of 'atrocious customer service'. Some customers have even ended up with a hit to their credit score.

Martin told the Sun: "This fine isn't enough. Actually, the real cost to Vodafone will be fixing the tens of thousands more bills that are wrong and potentially ensuing credit score problems. This is a crucial reminder if you're a Vodafone customer that your bills might be wrong."

Martin's advice is to check your bills and bank statements for anything strange - make sure you're on the right tariff, look out for any incorrect charges and check that your payments are actually being taken through direct debit, if you arranged for them to be taken this way.
