Bad News Chocolate Fans, UK Chocolate Bars Are About To Get A Lot Smaller

2017 is trying it's best to be worse than 2016.

Some bad news to add to your Sunday morning hangover - most of your favourite chocolate treats are about to get smaller.

Three big names in the chocolate-making industry: Mars, Nestle and Mondelez - the owner of Cadburys - have all promised to reduce the size of their products by a whopping 20 percent.

Dairy Milk, Kit-kat, Mars and Snickers will all be affected as companies aim to meet new 'sugar targets' set by the government, reports The Times. Failure to meet the new targets will see the big brands named and shamed in child obesity reports from Public Health England.

By knocking down the size of the bars chocolate-makers can push out products with less sugar, without affecting the taste or producing a 'laxative effect' with artificial sweeteners. Nice.

Nestle told The Times reducing the size of its chocolate bars is "an effective way to reduce sugar".

There's been no official comment on whether the smaller bars will come with a lower price, but they're knocking out Freddos for 25p so who knows?

Please, stop messing with our chocolate

It's been a rough few months for greedy bastards, like me, remember the heart-breaking news about Toblerones getting smaller?

Mondelez, who make Toblerone, blamed the rising costs of ingredients. They decided that rather than jacking up the prices to cover the costs they would just make the bars smaller, so the 400g is now 360g and the 170g is now 150g.

They just look weird now, too:

Of course, the Great British public were not happy.

This was followed up with the devastating news from Mondelez (those bastards, again) that the size of my beloved Terry's Chocolate Orange had shrunk from a hefty 175g a couple of years back to just 157g.

Matt knows.

Someone was so incensed that they made this Facebook page.

And, honestly, guys it's about to get worse, because the Freddo is actually set to go up by 5p pretty soon. The teeny, tiny bar should remain unaffected by the shrinking, though, so that's something, I suppose.

It's not all doom and gloom, though, for the first time ever Mars has created a box of Malteasers Teasers - which seems to be everyone's favourite from the Celebrations box. Just get your hands on them quick before they shrink or rocket in price, or both.
