A group calling for Cornish independence has claimed responsibility for a recent firebombing of a restaurant, and has also claimed it has its first member who is willing to die for the cause.

The Cornish Republican Army, formally known as the Cornish National Liberation Army, has said it set fire to celebrity chef Rick Stein's restaurant in Porthleven in June. The group said it started the fire as a protest for the well-known chef having such a large presence in the area.

In a post to its blog, which has since been removed, the group wrote: "Our organisation has grown and we now have one member who is prepared to pay the ultimate price in the battle for Kernow. She is prepared to sacrifice herself although we shall not ask for this lightly - only as a last measure." The group claims to have 30 volunteers in 'Active Service Units'.

The post also went on to say the group's next move would be to attack the second homes of rich people from the rest of the UK who live in Cornwall. The group are particularly angry over the idea of second homes as they claim it creates 'ghost towns' and prevents locals from getting their foot on the property ladder.

The post went on: "We have removed scores of Blood Cross flags and destroyed them," the term 'Blood Cross flags' is believed to be a reference to the St George's flag.

"We have also issued warnings to owners of holiday businesses flying the flag...our activities against second and expensive English-owned homes will continue.

"We also intend to target those authorities including the EIS police who victimise Cornish people. What have we to fear or lose - nothing.

"We note that others are damaging the English Tudor Signs and we support this action. Letters sent to the EIS are wasted efforts."

Telly chef Rick Stein has several restaurants in Cornwall; his Porthlevan restaurant was just 15 minutes away from being completely destroyed in the blaze, according to firefighters, after a lean-to, which was used to house gas cylinders was set alight. Speaking at the time, police said they were not ruling out the prospect of it being an arson attack.
