Banksy Is Offering Free Art To People Who Don’t Vote For The Tories

Banksy Is Offering Free Art To People Who Don’t Vote For The Tories

Interesting tactic.

We're getting down to the nitty gritty end of the election campaign and influential people are throwing their weight around to sway those who are still on the fence.

One of those people is the enigmatic artist known as Banksy. He's never been one to shy away from highlighting issues around the world including government surveillance, war, slave labour and technology.

So he's decided to throw his voice into the ring for the UK general election. He's posted a message on his website, saying that anyone who votes for anyone but the Conservatives will get a free, limited edition artwork. The post says: "[It] is only available to registered voters in the Bristol North West, Bristol West, North Somerset, Thornbury, Kingswood and Filton constituencies.

"Simply send in a photo of your ballot paper from polling day showing you voted against the Conservative candidate and this complimentary gift will be mailed to you."

The print is a rework of his 2002 mural called Balloon Girl, which has a union jack balloon instead of a red one.

In the small print, Banksy explains that it is a souvenir piece which has no monetary value and is not intended to influence anyone's choices. There were mixed reactions from people on social media.

But people should be wary about signing up to the deal. Under UK law it is illegal to reveal how someone voted and taking a picture of the ballot paper's ID number is also banned. Last year people voting in the Brexit referendum were reminded to not take selfies.

A statement on their website read: "The Electoral Commission advises voters not to take photos inside the polling station as they could potentially breach the secrecy of the ballot requirements. Anyone who wants to take a selfie can do this outside the polling station."

Voting for the general election gets away on June 8.
