My parents are still sitting in Facebook's Friend Request section because I'm wary about them seeing my random status updates or messy photos from nights out.

But this would probably be the only person above the age of 50 who I'd love to have as a friend on the social networking site.

Despite recently turning 91, Queen Elizabeth II is taking to modern technology like a duck to water to keep connected with her family and friends.

According to journalist Brian Hoey, writing in the Daily Mail: "She has her own mobile, has learned how to text and her phone is among the most sophisticated in the world. It is encrypted, like those used by the security services, and is said to be impossible to be hacked into.

"When she needed expert tuition in how to operate it, she was able to turn to her eldest grandchildren, Peter Phillips and his sister, Zara, who are wizards with all kinds of electronic gadgets.

"The Queen also has an iPad and a laptop, and she has a personal account on Facebook - though no one outside the Palace knows how many 'friends' she has."

Apparently, the Queen speaks to two people mainly: her daughter, Princess Anne, and her racing manager John Warren.

The Queen doesn't have a personal Twitter account, although there is an official one for the Royal Family. That is largely run by media teams which post general updates on the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the rest of the family.

I really hoped the Twitter account, started in 2010, named @Queen_UK, was real. That is just comedy gold.

There was a large buzz around Buckingham Palace this morning after the Queen called a staff meeting for all her servants from Royal residences across the country.

It was to tell staff that Prince Philip will be stepping down from Royal duties.

Staff were addressed by the most senior officer of the Royal household - Lord Chamberlain - and the Queen's private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt, according to the Daily Mail.

The Prince consort, famous for gaffes such as the one in the video below, is 95 years old and will officially step down in the autumn. His duties are now likely to be shared between son Charles, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Since 1952, The Duke of Edinburgh has carried out 22,191 solo engagements. Probably fair play that he puts his feet up in that case.
