Hayden Cross was three years into his quest to become a man but paused the treatment so that he could get pregnant. He was going to freeze his eggs and find a surrogate later in life but the NHS refused the procedure and he was unable to afford it privately.

The 21-year-old was still desperate to have child, so made the difficult decision to get pregnant before having the gender reassignment surgery. He found a sperm donor on Facebook, who, according to the Daily Mail, dropped off his sample in a pot on Hayden's doorstep.

The dad told the Sun: "I found I was pregnant two weeks after the sperm was inserted. It was mixed emotions. I was happy but I also knew it would be backtracking on my transition. It is a very female thing to carry a baby and it goes against everything I feel in my body."

The former Asda worker revealed in January that he had been pregnant since September. But it wasn't until last night that his grandmother shared the news that Hayden had given birth last month.

Not only that, but Hayden's mum gave birth to her fifth child two days before he did. The young man's grandmother, Pam Edgeworth, has told the Daily Mail: "I'm delighted. I became a grandmother again and a great-grandmother within 48 hours. Both mothers and babies are well."

The baby has been named Trinity-Leigh Louise Cross. On the birth certificate, Hayden appears as the mother and no father is listed.

He says that the news of his pregnancy hasn't gone down well with some people.

It's been a rocky journey for Hayden and his family after revealing he wanted to transition into a man.

His uncle Sean Hodson claims that if Hayden didn't have such a 'difficult upbringing' then he wouldn't want to swap genders, reports the Mail. Even his grandmother found it hard to understand the concept and wouldn't call him by his new legal name.

Now that he has given birth he will reportedly go ahead with the full gender reassignment surgery he had previously planned, including having his breasts and ovaries removed.

Hayden says he will remain single while the baby is young to provide the best possible start in life and that he plans to be the 'greatest dad'.

While the 21-year-old will hold the title for the first man to become pregnant in the UK, he's not the first on the planet. American man Thomas Beatie conceived his first child in 2007 and went on to have two more children using a sperm donor before fully transitioning to a man.
