Footballers Rio and Anton Ferdinand have lost their mum, Janice St Fort, after a battle with cancer. It's understood that the 58-year-old died on Thursday, surrounded by family.

The former England and Manchester United star has taken to social media to describe Janice's huge influence on his life.

He says: "It won't ever be enough but I just want to say thanks, a really big thank you.

"The ability you had to make me feel loved at every moment in my life without even having to say it or be there by my side will never be forgotten. You were a fighter, a little fighter but with a huge heart. And you wore that heart on your sleeve throughout.

"You were fiery, you were protective, you was [sic] soft and hard faced when need be... you loved hard, you disciplined me, you were a grafter and you were my everything."

Ferdinand mentions how hard she worked to support the family over the years as well as support him through his footballing career. He added: "The way you have touched so many people's hearts will live on and will be the way many will remember you mum.

"You were an inspirational person in so many ways, one day I will be able to tell you them all face to face. Love you mummy."

It's only two years since Rio's wife, Rebecca Ellison, died after developing breast cancer. His new girlfriend Kate Wright also took to social media to pay tribute to Janice.

Her message read: "Always loved, never forgotten, forever missed."

Their words were echoed by Rio's brother Anton, who took to Instagram to describe his mum as 'selfless'.

Anton goes on to say: "Mum for 32 years of my life uve [sic] done nothing but put me first! always cared and worried about others before yourself an inspiration to me my brothers sister and husband Peter and anyone she had in her life. Mum we will still be having our talks in the morning when i'm on the way to work."

He paid tribute to the staff at Guy's Cancer Unit in London, who looked after his mum during her battle.
