False Widow Spiders Have Taken Over This Bus Stop And They're Not Leaving

Kill them with fire?

What's the worst thing about your commute? Delayed buses? Cancelled trains? Torrential downpours during July?

Well, spare a thought for the poor folks who live in Felton, near Bristol Airport, who have to share their bus stop with an infestation of 50p-sized false widow spiders.

Local resident Helen Day, 39, says she's seen at least five of the creepy buggers and is worried that the number could rise quickly, as they breed during the summer months.

Don't be fooled by the name - false widow spiders are cousins of black widows and are the most venomous species in Britain. They can also give an incredibly painful bite to anyone who gets close enough.

Helen said: "If anybody goes into the shelter, it only takes one to jump onto a rucksack. In the heat, they're only going to get worse. They breed like wildfire.

"I'm petrified of spiders. I'm on crutches so I can't stand for long or sit for long.

"I'm happy to pay for it if the council doesn't do anything. I've already spoken to a pest controller."

Helen, who says the bus stop is mostly used by elderly and disabled people, complained to North Somerset Council about the problem, but claims she was told the spiders 'would only bite if they were provoked'.

Yeah, think I'll just take my chances with the rain, thanks. Credit: SWNS

I don't think I'd be willing to test that theory.
