A waitress who was left a racist note by a customer has had an overwhelming response since the note was posted online.

Kelly Carter, who works at Anita's New Mexicso Style Café in the US, says she served two customers who she believed to be in their mid-20s. They asked for the bill for their meal and paid, but once they left she saw that they had written: "Great service don't tip black people."

A picture of the receipt was posted by Loudoun Couty NAACP on Twitter and has been shared hundreds of times, but it's the response from the local community that has been the most overwhelming.

The owner of the restaurant, Tommy Tellex, told the BBC that the response from regular customers and the rest of the community had been "phenomenal."

A crowd-funding account has raised over $2,828 (£2,325), smashing the original target of $2000; and others have been popping into the restaurant to give her cash.

Kelly told local media that she would happily serve the couple again, who she says complimented her on the breakfast she served them. She said: "One hateful remark cannot stop me.

"My arms are still opened to me. He only hurt himself. He only makes me stronger."

She insisted to that she really would like to see the couple again, saying: "Just me serving them will let them know they did not get the best of me. And I truly mean that."

Well, she's much bigger than me.
