Convicted paedophile footballer Adam Johnson has reportedly demanded a prison transfer after being informed a jail gang is plotting to murder him.

The former England player was tipped off by a fellow inmate he could be the target of a 'shank attack', with several prisoners planning to slash his throat with a makeshift knife, reports The Sun.

He has already spent time in Moorland Prison's segregation for his own protection, following a video surfacing in April. In the video, Johnson said he wished that he had sex with the girl he was convicted of engaging in sexual activity with.

A source at the prison told The Sun: "He is in bits. The other lag was doing him a favour by tipping him off but it has left Johnson beside himself with worry.

"He doesn't know when or how the attack will come but he was told there was a plot to slice his throat."

In March last year he was sentenced to six years in prison for grooming and sexual activity with a child - during the case it also emerged that police found animal pornography on Johnson's laptop, although he wasn't tried for possession of these files.

At trial, Johnson, who has a two-year-old daughter with former partner Stacey Flounders, told the court he was 'ashamed' of his actions, which saw him jailed for grooming, kissing and touching. He added: "I wholeheartedly and unreservedly apologise for my actions."

But in a subsequent sting video, filmed in the prison laundry room, he claimed his sentence was lengthened due to his position as a professional footballer - and appeared to show little remorse for his actions.

Detective Inspector Aelfwynn Sampson said at the time of his imprisonment: "Johnson exploited his position as a local hero to take advantage of a young and impressionable girl.

"From the start of their contact, he knew full well that she had just turned 15 and yet this did not stop him. He no doubt thought that he would get away it."

Moorland holds around 1,000 prisoners, of which 340 are sex offenders.
