An American Airlines steward who suffers from a condition which makes her sensitive to certain chemicals has claimed that her new uniform is making her ill.

She is among over 2,000 other flight attendants who are reportedly itching to get the old ones back, according to NBC.

Heather Poole, 44, claims that she has had to see doctors several times since the new kit was introduced in September last year.

"I dread going to work. I love my job, but my job is making me sick", she told the Sun.

It follows from a letter from the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, a union representing over 25,000 flight attendants, that claimed the uniforms cause a variety of issues including eye swelling, rashes, skin blistering, wheezing, headaches, and vertigo.

"Personal health is so integral and critical to our flight attendant workforce, who must be able to work in a healthy manner and environment. To do so, our members need proper and safe uniforms," wrote the union's president, Bob Ross, in a letter on Wednesday to American Airline's general counsel.

The company's 70,000 employees were handed 1.5 million new slate grey uniforms last year, which were brought in to replace the old navy blue attire.

Ms Poole has blogged about her problems wearing the new uniform and how she feels ignored due to 'stereotypes' in the workplace.

"Since the uniform debuted on September 20, I've seen more doctors than I've ever seen in my life and I've learned things about toxic chemicals I never knew before," she wrote.

"Over the last nine months, I was called 'psycho' and 'crazy'.

"Because the sexy stereotype won't die, nobody cares when we have something serious to discuss."

"I've been a flight attendant for 20 years and I've never felt like this before.

"This is not a coincidence; so many other flight attendants have suffered a variety of ailments since the uniforms were introduced in September. From rashes and hives to serious respiratory issues."

American Airlines' uniform suppliers, Twin Hill, claimed that lab tests have shown that the clothes are safe but said the current contract would not be renewed as part of a mutual agreement.

A spokesperson for Twin Hill told LADbible: "We are confident of the quality and integrity of our products, and that the very similar symptoms now being alleged by American Airlines employees are not related to our products.

"However, Twin Hill has determined that the reputational risk, management distraction, and legal and other costs associated with serving American in the future would be unacceptable to our business, given the likelihood of continued unfounded allegations about the safety of our garments.

"Accordingly, the company has mutually agreed with American not to renew our current uniform contract when it expires in 2020."
