Although John Cena is undoubtedly still the WWE's biggest superstar, it has emerged he is not the company's best paid after Forbes collected last year's tax returns and figured out who made what in 2016.

The honour of the highest earning wrestler went to Brock Lesnar, who is estimated to have earned as much from his UFC 200 purse and split of the PPV buys as he did all of his WWE earnings.

Although he topped the 2015 list, Cena moved down to the number two spot due in part to absences with injury and filming he took part in outside of the WWE.

Triple H ranks third with $3.8 million (£3.04m) in earnings last year. The number being a combination of wrestler pay for in-story COO Triple H and executive compensation for his behind the scenes work.

Similarly Stephanie McMahon - who is married to Triple H - also plays the role of company executive and in-ring performer, and last year she made $2 million (£1.6m) between the two jobs.

Roman Reigns comes in at fourth, having seen his earnings go up, as he made $1.4 million (£1.04m) more in 2016, mainly thanks to him being second in merchandise sales behind Cena.

AJ Styles and Shane McMahon were the two newcomers to the list. Both reached the $2 million mark in 2016, after Styles debuted with WWE and McMahon made his return to the company.

The highest paid list from 2015 to 2016 didn't see too many changes, with only WWE old-timers Big Show and Kane falling out of the top 10 from the 2015 list.

Here is the list in full:

1. Brock Lesnar - $12 million (£9.6m)
2. John Cena - $8 million (£6.4m)
3. Triple H - $ 3.8 million (£3.04m)
4. Roman Reigns - $3.5 million (£2.8m)
5. Dean Ambrose - $2.7 million (£2.16m)
6. AJ Styles - $2.4 million (£1.92m)
7. Shane McMahon - $2.2 million (£1.76m)
8. The Undertaker - $2 million (£1.6m)
9. Seth Rollins - $2 million (£1.6m)
10. Randy Orton - $1.9 million (£1.52m)
