CCTV Footage Captures Cowboy Taking Down Gun-Toting Robber

Not all heroes wear capes: but sometimes they wear massive cowboy hats and tackle teenage robbers

Cowboys are pretty cool. That's a given. From the Marlboro Man (OK, smoking isn't cool, but it's cowboys who are on trial here) to the lads from Brokeback Mountain and Woody from Toy Story, they've seared their way into the collective consciousness and created an aesthetic that we all understand. They're tough, rugged, uncompromising and principled.

Need proof? How about this Mexican gaucho, who showed his mettle on a routine trip to the butchers:

In Monterrey, a Mexican city close to the Texan border, a humble cowboy was in buying his meat when a teenage hoodlum ran into the show and attempted to stick it up with a gun.

He flashes his piece at the store clerk and then at the cowboy, resplendent in his massive hat and tash.

When the boy points the gun square in his face, the cowboy doesn't flinch for a second: he simply removes his sunglasses.

The attacker turns to threaten another customer and the cowboy strikes, jumping the gunman from behind and dislodging the gun from his grasp.

He wrestles with the would-be robber out of the view of the security cameras, while a butcher runs in to pick up the gun that is now lying on the floor.

The cowboy and the thief then roll back into shot - the boy has now lost his shirt, presumably in the fight - and as the young man attempts to flee the shop, he is tackled by a third man, wearing a butcher's outfit.

Between the three men, they manage to get the robber's arms behind him and take him to the ground.

Of course, in the general day to day of cowboying, there aren't many opportunities to show the world what being a real cowboy is about.

The drudgery of rounding up cattle, wearing a hat and providing a convenient archetype for country musicians who've never actually ridden a horse is just a prelude for that moment when the cowboy gets to live their heroic dream.

You might question why a cowboy was in the butchers at all, but presumably everyone has to get their shopping done, and this was where the action and drama of the Western genre appeared in glorious colour on the CCTV screen.

Not all heroes wear capes, but it turns out that some of them wear cowboy hats. And, apparently, butcher's outfits.
