The Mexican judge who presided over appeals by Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman and other drug cartel figures has been assassinated while jogging outside his home.

Judge Vicente Bermudez, 37, was executed by a gunman who shot him in the back of the head in Metepec, an area 40 miles from Mexico City.

The footage was captured by a surveillance camera...

In the footage, an assassin, dressed in dark clothing, ran up behind the judge, shoots him and then flees the scene. The judge was taken to hospital but could not be saved.

Bermudez had dealt with legal challenges brought by lawyers representing El Chapo, the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

The judge had also dealt with appeals by lawyers on behalf of Miguel Trevino, ex-leader of the Zetas cartel, who is currently being held at the maximum security Altiplano jail close to the judge's home.

Guzman was previously held there but was recently transferred to a jail near Ciudad Juarez.

Guzman's lawyers have filed a number of legal challenges to prevent his extradition to the USA.
