Police are investigating if a French backpacker suspected of stabbing Mia Ayliffe-Chung to death in Queensland, Australia had a romantic obsession with the 21-year-old after a he posted a creepy message on his Facebook wall prior to her killing.

Mia was murdered in a brutal attack at a backpackers' hostel overnight, while three others were injured. Twenty-nine-year-old Frenchman Smail Ayad has now been charged with the killing.

According to Sickchirpse, people staying at the youth hostel have said that Ayad became obsessed with Mia in the days leading up to the attack, telling other members of the hostel that they were in love and married. They also reportedly said that after she failed to return his affections Ayad attacked her, while others were injured when trying to stop him.

The website also claims he posted the following onto his profile, shortly before the killing was carried out: "I am a victim. I feel I'm going to die soon. Whoever you are who like me, please follow me. I love everyone."

Ayad, who is a kickboxer, has been charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and 12 of serious assault.

Several officers were injured as they tried to apprehend him. They suffered cuts and bruises while one was bitten on the leg as Ayad repeatedly yelled 'allahu akbar'.

Superintendent Ray Rohweder described the attack as "absolutely horrific".

Superintendent Rohweder said: "I've viewed the CCTV of what actually occurred.

"There's no one that can view that CCTV that doesn't come away feeling sick to the stomach. It's just absolutely horrific."

RIP Mia Ayliffe-Chung.
