Last night it was revealed that Ant McPartlin has checked into rehab after experiencing problems with drink and prescription, prompting an outpouring of support from fans.

Earlier today, his I'm A Celebrity and Britain's Got Talent co-host, Declan Donnelly, thanked the public for their well wishes.

Speaking on the duo's joint Twitter account, Dec wrote: "Thank you for all the kind messages and well wishes for the big fella. He will be touched. Your support is, as ever, much appreciated."

Ant's wife also thanked people, saying she was 'over-whelmed' by the reaction.

Writing on Twitter, she said: "Completely overwhelmed by all your love & support it means so much. I'm relieved he's receiving the help he needs, we just need him better."

Now Piers Morgan - as per usual - has waded in and offered his view, he said: "Few nicer people in show business than Ant McPartlin. Wish him all the best as he sorts himself out."

Although it sounds uncontroversial, users on social media have been quick to point out the hypocrisy of him offering his support, given that depression and anxiety have played a role in Ant's struggles.

Back in May the former Daily Mirror editor caused a stir after making controversial comments about how people should approach their struggles with mental illness.

He said that people needed to 'man up' and we should 'focus on those who really need help' when it comes to mental illness.

"34 million UK adults are mentally ill? What utter nonsense," he wrote. "Man up, Britain & focus on those who REALLY need help."

Given those remarks, here's how some on Twitter reacted to Morgan's tweet of support...

Piers Morgan being made to eat his word, what's new there? Though fair play to him for supporting Ant, as I'm sure we all wish him on his road to recovery.
