New York police chiefs have confirmed the amazing reason why a second bomb didn't go off over the weekend in New York, as well as the bomb that did explode in New Jersey.

Two thieves accidentally disabled a second bomb planted in an unattended bag in New York after stealing it, potentially saving dozens of lives.

According to NYPD chief Robert Boyce, the two men opened the rolling suitcase and removed the device before placing it into a bin.

He added: "Once they picked up the bag, they seemed incredulous. They had actually picked this up off the street and they walked off with it.

"They look like they were two gentlemen just strolling up and down Seventh Avenue at the time."

A police source added: "Who in this world finds a pressure cooker with a phone and just takes the bag?"

The news comes as the New York and New Jersey bombings suspect is being held in custody following a shootout with police that began when he was found sleeping in a bar doorway, the BBC reported.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, is currently undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound sustained during the shootout. Two officers were also injured in the incident in Linden, New Jersey.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, left, and New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill, hold a press conference after the arrest of Rahami.

Earlier today, the New York mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack an 'act of terror'.

The FBI has said no other suspect is being sought over the bombings.

So, in this instance, crime has paid.
