He's always up to something.

The US is claiming that Vladimir Putin's government spiked two diplomats' drinks with date-rape drugs.

It is claimed the druggings took place in November last year, leading the US State Department to complain to the Kremlin of Putin, who is celebrating his birthday today, about what had happened.

According to RFERL, investigators discovered that a man and a woman, travelling on diplomatic passports, had their drinks spiked with the drugs.

It seems that this most likely occurred at the bar of the hotel the pair were staying at in St Petersburg. Now questions are being raised around why it happened and whether whoever did it knew who they were.

One of the diplomats was in such a bad way they had to be taken to a clinic for treatment, while their blood and tissue samples were taken to try and determine the cause of the illness. Weirdly, the hospital lost its power and by the time the patient was taken to another hospital it was too late to get any useful samples.

State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau said: "We are troubled, and we remain troubled, by the way our diplomatic and consular staff have been treated over the past two years."

So far Putin hasn't responded, but it's his birthday today, so he's probably got his party hat on and his phone off.
