It has been revealed that Dr Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, requested that the White House released classified UFO data from secret files.

Dr Mitchell also slammed government policy as 'outdated' prior to his death in February this year and called for Barack Obama to take "the next steps" in releasing alien files for the "benefits of our country and our planet."

The Apollo 14 astronaut was known for his outspoken views on the existence of UFOs.

The emails passed between the former astronaut and the Oval Office were revealed as part of WikiLeaks' release of secret information.

Mitchell wrote to John Podesta, the former counsellor for President Obama, and current chairman of the 'Hillary Clinton for President' campaign, to make the request.

Previous email leaks have revealed that Mitchell and Podesta had conversations about a war in space and warned UFOs would not tolerate human conflict in orbit.

In the leaked email, Dr Mitchell said: "Five decades of UFO information have dramatically shifted the public awareness of an extraterrestrial presence.

"And yet, our government is still operating from outdated beliefs and policies.

"These are detrimental to trust in government transparency, science, religion and responsible citizenry embracing the next step in our country's space travel and research."

Dr Mitchell also demanded a meeting with President Obama. This didn't come to fruition.
