Turns Out You Were Right To Be Concerned About That White Stuff On Your Chicken

Turns Out You Were Right To Be Concerned About That White Stuff On Your Chicken

Weird one this.

"Eww, gross, not fucking eating that"

If that's your response to the weird white bits you sometimes find on raw chicken, then science has proven your response is the correct one.

That's because it's caused by a muscle disorder called "white striping", which is contaminating a lot of the chicken we eat.

The problem is the focus of a new campaign and video by Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), an animal welfare group.

Here are just a few stats:

  • According to a 2013 study published in the Italian Journal of Animal Science, the condition ups fat content by 224% and lowers the amount of protein.
  • Research published in Poultry Science the same year came to a similar conclusion: Fat increased and muscle decreased based on the amount of white striping.
  • The condition looks like white striations running parallel to the regular muscle. According to a 2016 study by University of Arkansas and Texas A&M, "the severity of white striping has increased in recent years," identifying it in 96% of the 285 birds they tested. More importantly, the condition "negatively impacts meat quality" by affecting marinade uptake and cook loss.

A spokesman for the National Chicken Council told Buzzfeed that white striping affects only a "small percentage of chicken meat," mainly "larger birds, not overall production," and "does not create any health or food safety concerns for people and the welfare of the chicken itself is not negatively impacted."

All these concerns about chicken aside, it might just be the most versatile food on the planet. It works in just about every dish you can imagine. Curries, burgers, roasts, nuggets, crisps, anything. I'd probably eat chicken if they made it a breakfast cereal and so would you.

Previously you might have thought that there's no better combination that chicken and a frying pan.

But in further chicken news, KFC just put something out on social media that might change your mind.

It might get you thinking: "aye, wait on, maybe chicken and pizza deserves the title of 'greatest food combination'?"

It seems that they're about to launch a 'Chizza'. It's a big ol' chicken breast fillet complete with cheese and toppings.

The news was shared on KFC's official Facebook page yesterday and we've been promised there's more to come when they officially announce the Chizza on their website.
