When somebody wrongs you, or someone you love, it's natural to want to get them back. But if everyone were just out there exacting Kill Bill-style revenge on people who pissed them off, the world would become some kind of horrific, anarchic dystopia where the punishments ended up becoming a lot worse than the crimes.

That's exactly what happened in the small community of Miravelles in southern Mexico, which is about a 20-minute drive from the town of Oriental, home to approximately 1,500 people.

After three people - two men and one woman - were caught allegedly trying to rob an elderly shop owner in the tiny village, vigilantes handcuffed the suspects and burned them alive in the middle of the street.

The trio were accused - yes, accused, not convicted - of hitting the elderly shopkeeper and demanding money.

According to reports, a village resident saw what was happening and alerted other members of the community by firing his gun.

When the shot went off, it's said that about 100 residents rushed out of their house and places of work and gave chase to the three suspects.

Once they caught up with them, they handcuffed and beat them. But instead of calling the police to arrest them, they set them on fire and burned them alive in the middle of the street.

Local police did arrive, but villagers threw rocks and swarmed them, driving away the police from the scene of the punishment/crime and they were unable to intervene.

It was only a bit later on, when local police returned with state police units, that they were able to disperse the angry mob and clear the area where the grim and grisly punishment had taken place - by which time, apparently, the three suspects had been burned to a crisp.

The case has been referred to the Attorney General's Office for processing and due investigation, but so far the bodies have not yet been identified and no arrests have been made.

Mexico's Secretariat of Public Security issued a bulletin confirming these facts, reports Proceso, which read: "Immediately state troops moved to the scene, interviewing the authorities of the municipality, who pointed out that the inhabitants were in a very aggressive attitude, preventing them from entering the town and threatening to attack them if they were not retired and apparently they had already killed the detainees."

Terrifying.
