A 'Starship Troopers' Video Game Is Coming Next Year
I think we can all agree that the original Starship Troopers is an absolute classic, right? The 1997 Paul Verhoeven sci-fi flick might have launched to mixed reviews back in the day, but it's gone on to become a beloved cult hit.
Unfortunately, a substantial, quality return to Verhoeven's universe is something we've been sorely lacking for years. That's if you ignore the handful of straight-to-DVD sequels and spin-off games, anyway... which most of us do.
The good news is that we might finally be about to get a Starship Troopers game worthy of the name. Starship Troopers: Terran Command is a brand-new real-time strategy game that's based on the first movie, and is due out next year. Take a look at the reveal trailer below.
Starship Troopers: Terran Command is in development at Slitherine Games and The Artistocrats. The publisher and developer have already established themselves as a team that knows how to make a fine strategy title. Their previous credits include Order of Battle: World War II, a thoroughly decent WWII RTS.
"If you take one of the most iconic movies from the 90s and shape it into a strategy game of survival, that mixes classic real-time mechanics, tower defense and tactical deployment of units then you have Starship Troopers: Terran Command in a nutshell," Slitherine development director Iain McNeil wrote in a post announcing the game.
"Modern strategy games are fast-paced and they successfully blend unit management, survival and captivating storytelling. Nothing is more suited to this type of gameplay than the Starship Troopers universe, where there is a continuous sense of danger and uncertainty."
I for one can't wait to see what they do with the Starship Troopers IP. I mean, who doesn't want to take charge of an army and fight off wave after wave of giant bugs?
There'll be all manner of creatures to fend off, including bugs with frickin' lasers in their tails. You'll have to keep your wits about you and make the most of your troops, turrets, and minefields to keep them at bay and be aware of their huge numbers and many attempts to ambush and blindside your poor troops.
The upcoming title is also set to feature dynamically generated campaigns, as well as missions that grow and develop based on your actions and effectiveness on the battlefield. You can follow the (often questionable) orders of the Terran Command and net yourself all kinds of new units and abilities, or go rogue and get unique upgrades for forging your own path.
There's no set release date for Starship Troopers: Terran Command, but keep an eye out for it in 2020. You can keep track of development over on Twitch if you fancy it in the meantime.
