Amazon Is Making A Free-To-Play Lord Of The Rings MMO

Amazon Is Making A Free-To-Play Lord Of The Rings MMO

There's a new Lord of the Rings MMO in development with the help of Amazon Game Studios. While the MMO was originally announced by developer Athlon Games in September 2018, Amazon is now also lending its development support to the project.

While Amazon is currently developing a Lord of the Rings television series for Amazon Prime, this new game won't actually overlap with the same time period. Nor will it touch on the same events as Lord of the Rings Online, the MMO that was launched back in 2007 and still runs today. This new MMO will be set in the Second Age, before the events of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings takes place.

The Second Age is basically all the set up for the events of Lord of the Rings - though, considering it's a period of more than 3,000 years, there's more to it that that. The Second Age kicks off after the defeat of the Dark Lord Morgoth. The Elves settle into Middle-Earth - establishing Rivendell; the Dwarves build their great underground cities; and a lad called Sauron begins to gain power. He convinces the Elves to make some fancy rings and he builds a city called Mordor. Developer Athlon hasn't said much at all about its MMO since it was originally announced, so we don't know when abouts in the Second Age it will take place.

Though, Amazon will be lending help to the game's development, at this point it's hard to know if Amazon's involvement will be a help or a hindrance. Amazon has been trying to get into the game development business for the past few years but so far it's released only a couple of games, the most recent of which was a terrible Top Gear racing game. It cancelled melee sports game Breakaway last year and its other MMO, New World, has been little heard from in a while.
