Persona Studio Atlus’s Sheep-Slaying Puzzle Game ‘Catherine’ Is Coming To PC
One of the weirder puzzle games you'll ever play, mixing as it does nightmarish block-shifting climbs with dating, drinking and the dilemma of committing to marriage, Atlus's Catherine is seemingly coming to PC after previously releasing exclusively for consoles.
The PC release date remains under wraps - but after SEGA's Steam teasing of something rather sheepish yesterday (3 January), it's come to light that Catherine is indeed headed to home computers.
Assuming it does release this year, the PC version of Catherine will come out in the same 12-month period as the anticipated, expanded Full Body edition of the game, for PlayStation 4 and Vita, which was revealed back in 2017. It currently has a Japanese release date of 14 February. See what you've done there, Atlus.
Full Body edition not only remasters the original game for the more-powerful PS4, but introduces a new love interest for protagonist Vincent Brooks in the shape of the mysterious Rin. In the vanilla game, Vincent is torn between his long-term partner, Katherine, who wants to settle down, and the compelling Catherine, who he stumbles into the affections of in the game's Stray Sheep bar. (One of gaming's best boozers, that.) Whatever Rin's exact role, it's sure to complicate Vincent's situation.
The stress that Vincent (voiced by Troy Baker, aka The Last of Us's Joel) experiences manifests itself as puzzle stages, played out while he sleeps. He must scale towers of moveable blocks - some with spikes, some bonuses - while being sure to neither fall to his death nor be caught by some terrifying 'bosses' that chase after him. Good grief, that baby stage... night terrors for weeks.
All the while, he's sporting ram-style horns - because in this dream realm, all naughty boys become lambs to the slaughter, you see. On reaching the top of each stage, Vincent can chat with several fully fluffy fellows, many of whom act a lot like the other patrons of the Stray Sheep. Hmm...
Made by the team behind the hugely popular Persona JRPG series, Catherine originally released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011 (2012 in Europe), and received a warm critical reception.
Celebrated for its demanding difficulty (although there's a cheat to get around that) and multiple (wildly different) climaxes, Catherine also attracted some controversy for its insensitive treatment of a transgender character, Erica, in one of its endings.
Whether the game's more controversial moments will receive a rethink in Full Body remains to be seen. We'll find out for sure later this year - just as we'll also learn exactly what this PC port contains.
