‘Borderlands 3’ May Not Get New Vault Hunters As DLC
Over the weekend, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford discussed plans for expanding Borderlands 3 after launch. One line of DLC that is still under debate is new vault hunters. "My feelings are that it might be better for us to put our time into expanding what the existing vault hunters can do and how interesting their future growth is instead of adding new ones to start over with," Pitchford wrote on Twitter.
While the original Borderlands didn't receive new vault hunters as DLC, Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel both did. Gaige the Mechromancer, Krieg the Psycho, Jack the Doppelganger, and Aurelia the Baroness were all added to the games after release.
Some of those DLC characters are well-loved, and are already confirmed to be appearing in Borderlands 3. But their success in the story isn't enough reason to add characters to the new game as DLC, too. According to Pitchford, the data Gearbox has from its previous games backs up up deepening existing character classes with DLC, not adding a bunch of new ones.
We are focused on the main game for now, but my feelings are that it might be better for us to put our time into expanding what the existing vault hunters can do and how interesting their future growth is instead of adding new ones to start over with. Data seems to support this.- Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) May 4, 2019
We know that Borderlands 3 will feature cosmetic DLC at launch, selling new skins and heads for the characters, but other plans for post-launch content haven't been announced yet. I suspect there will be more story DLC, akin to Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. While that sort of DLC could be used to add new abilities to existing vault hunters, it's more that story DLC is an opportunity to deepen our understanding and relationship with those characters.
