'Borderlands' Movie In Talks With Oscar-Winning Star To Play Lilith

'Borderlands' Movie In Talks With Oscar-Winning Star To Play Lilith

Like it or not, it seems that the Borderlands movie is barreling along with grim determination. Back in February we learned that actor/director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) is set to helm the picture. Now, it seems the project is eyeing up the most unlikely talent to join the anarchic video game adaptation.

Yes, according to Variety, none other than Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett is apparently in talks to star in the Borderlands movie as Lilith. For those unfamiliar with Borderlands lore, Lilith is a major player across all the games. She's also one of six Sirens, a group of women with incredible powers. Sirens have always been a crucial part of the Borderlands story, so it's good to know they'll clearly be playing a role in the movie.

Honestly, I can't say I ever would have considered the possibility of an actor of Blanchett's caliber joining the project... but she does have a diverse and colourful filmography. Most recently, her turn as Hela in Thor Ragnarok showed us she's more than happy to get stuck into weird, funny sci-fi capers.

Last we heard, Craig Mazin, who won an Emmy for writing Chernobyl and is currently working on HBO's The Last Of Us had provided a script for Borderlands. Perhaps that's what caught Blanchett's eye? Who could possibly say for sure, though. I mean, I guess Blanchett could.

Borderlands could be a great fit for her, then... and certainly a promising sign for the movie if she does sign on. Note the "if", as Variety stresses Blanchett hasn't actually agreed to anything yet.

Anyway, Borderlands is being executive produced by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, as well as Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. I honestly have no idea what direction this film is going to go in, but I have a feeling it's going to be the most beautiful mess I've ever seen in my life.

The Borderlands Movie Is Reportedly Being Directed By Eli Roth

In other video game movie news, the long-gestating Uncharted movie finally started filming... only to be shut down after one day due to Coronavirus effectively putting the whole of Hollywood on ice. Given the unpredictable nature of this virus and the alarming speed with which it spreads, it's unclear when work on many of these projects will be able to start up again.

As a result though, I certainly wouldn't expect to see Borderlands any time soon. It'll probably still beat Uncharted into cinemas though.
