2018's Brilliant Platformer 'Celeste' Tops Xbox Games With Gold Next Month

2018's Brilliant Platformer 'Celeste' Tops Xbox Games With Gold Next Month

Microsoft has announced January's Games With Gold, the monthly giveaway accessible to Xbox users who've subscribed to an Xbox Live Gold membership.

Each month, four games are selected by the powers that be for free download - usually two last-gen releases (Xbox 360 titles), and two more recent ones.

And January's line up is set to be the perfect remedy for your post-Christmas blues, featuring as it does the brilliant Celeste, WRC 6, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Far Cry 2. Not a shabby line-up, at all.

Let's start with the current-gen releases, specifically Celeste. This demanding platformer, developed by Matt 'Towerfall' Thorson (aka Matt Makes Games) and Noel Berry, is an absolute treat, providing you can rise to its challenge. You only have to look at its reviews: 10/10 on Steam, 10/10 from IGN, 94% on Metacritic for Xbox One - and the list goes on.

It might even be appearing in our GAMINGbible Games of the Year - our rundown begins tomorrow, on Facebook. Make sure you give it a whirl - if you're signed up to Games With Gold, there's really no excuse not to.

Next up is World Rally Championship 6. It's no Forza Horizon 4, granted, but it's not bad, and it's free. It launched two years ago, and if you haven't subscribed to the Xbox Game Pass - where Horizon 4 is on offer - it may ticket your ticket to ride... virtually.

If you haven't played this year's Shadow of the Tomb Raider, or any other adventure from Square Enix's Tomb Raider trilogy, you can still get your archaeological fix with the 360's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. And if you get a buddy to download it, you can play in co-op.

Finally comes Far Cry 2, the second instalment in one of the most enjoyable open-world series to date. It may not boast the kind of graphical flair found in the 2018's Far Cry 5, but revisiting the 2008 title should be interesting, when you realise how much the franchise has grown over the last decade. And to several critics, it's this game that represents the series' high watermark.

What do you think about this list? Will you be playing any of these games? Which is the best of the four? Make sure you let us know.
