'Cyberpunk 2077' Story Is Shorter Than 'The Witcher 3' Following Complaints

Cyberpunk 2077's main storyline will be a bit shorter than The Witcher 3's, according to CD Projekt RED. Speaking during a recent Night City Wire stream, the developer confirmed that its upcoming sci-fi RPG will have a shorter central narrative because "tremendous amounts of people" never saw the end of Geralt's epic story, leading to "a lot of complaints".

Senior quest designer Patrick K. Mills said that Cyberpunk 2077 will be "slightly shorter" to encourage more people to finish it. According to the ever-reliable How Long To Beat, the main story of The Witcher 3 alone comes in at a whopping 51 hours. Considering most people will have also been distracted by the game's massive open world and various sidequests, it's little wonder that so many failed to see the credits roll on the fantasy RPG.

"The main story run in Cyberpunk 2077 is slightly shorter than The Witcher 3," Mills said (via, ResetEra). "We got a lot of complaints about The Witcher 3's main story just being too long. And looking at the metrics, you see tremendous amounts of people played through that game really far, but never made it to the end.

"We want you to see the whole story. So, we did shorten the main story, but we have lots to do. And in terms of a completionism campaign, I just don't have that number."

Even if the main story of Cyberpunk 2077 ends up being half of the one seen in The Witcher 3, fans are still looking at a considerably sprawling narrative. This being an open-world RPG, there'll also be a ton of sidequests, diversions, and other fun things off the beaten path. There are even multiple origin stories for your character, and various ways to approach the game's ending, so if you're at all worried that Cyberpunk 2077 isn't going to give you as much bang for your buck as The Witcher 3, don't be.

Cyberpunk 2077 comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 19th. There's no official word on when the next-gen versions launch, but those of you who already have the current-gen Cyberpunk 2077 can upgrade to PlayStation 5/Xbox Series consoles for free.
