'Death Stranding 2' Being Considered By Kojima, But He'd Start From Scratch

'Death Stranding 2' Being Considered By Kojima, But He'd Start From Scratch

Developer Hideo Kojima has revealed that he's open to working on a sequel to the utterly bizarre and divisive Death Stranding. The open-world strand/action/mailman simulation game launched last month, and players immediately fell into two camps. There were those that thought the game was an absolute masterpiece, and those that thought it was kind of... a slog.

Whatever your opinion, I'm sure we can all agree that it was nice to see a AAA release attempt to do something different. Even it didn't all work quite as brilliantly as Kojima might have hoped, there were some interesting ideas on display in Death Stranding's gorgeous, ridiculous world.

Considering this, I don't think I'd be entirely against a sequel. I'd very much like to see how Kojima could build on the shared world aspect of Death Stranding, maybe while improving some features - like the godawful menus and inventory management. I'm still not sure how anyone could defend that aspect of the game.

Like it or not, a sequel might very well be on the cards. In a recent interview with Vulture, Kojima revealed that he'd be well up for working with Death Stranding star Norman Reedus again. He added that if he did, it would likely be a sequel to the pair's most recent collaboration.

The only "catch" is that Kojima would apparently want to "would start from zero" on any potential sequel. It's not entirely clear what this means, but I'm assuming Kojima would want to build on the world, ideas and elements introduced in Death Stranding, rather than continue the story of the first game.

Perhaps we'd see how the Death Stranding impacted other parts of the world? Maybe Norman Reedus would play an entirely different character, just to mess with us all? It could even be that Reedus appears as Sam Bridges, but isn't the main character. As is always the way with Kojima, his comments were a little vague, so who can say for sure?

Personally? I reckon we've seen the last of Death Stranding. I couldn't even begin to try and explain the ending to you even if I wanted to, but I got the feeling that Kojima only ever really intended for it to be a one-off game.

As for the future of Kojima Productions? It looks the developer is currently gearing up to return to the horror genre. According to a recent tweet from the Metal Gear creator, he's been preparing for his next project by watching a ton of horror films to "awaken his horror soul" and "make the scariest horror game".

If he wants to team up with Guillermo del Toro and give us something similar to the Silent Hills game we were all so cruelly denied years ago, I'd be fine with that.
