'DOOM' Creator John Romero Is Working On A New FPS Game

'DOOM' Creator John Romero Is Working On A New FPS Game

John Romero is widely recognised as the father of such iconic, genre-defining gems as DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D. Both are titles that have held up beautifully over the years, thanks to buttery smooth gameplay and impeccable map design.

Truly, there aren't many first person shooters out there that don't owe a debt of some kind to these 90s classics. It's good news then, that Romero seems to be making tentative steps to return to the genre he helped put on the map. Speaking during a recent AMA on Reddit, the developer said he's come up with a "design" for a new FPS inspired by DOOM and Quake.

Also during the AMA, he expressed his love and appreciation for id Software's 2016 DOOM reboot. As well he should, because that was easily one of the greatest FPS games to have come out in years. This is a fact.

When responding to a question about his thoughts on the latest incarnation of DOOM and if he'd be up for returning to the genre, Romero had a solid two-pronged answer for us.

"I really like the new DOOM 2016, and from what I can see of DOOM Eternal, it's going to be a winner as well," he said. "And, yes, I do have a design for an FPS in the style of DOOM/Quake."

Unfortunately that's all Reddit managed to get out of Romero on the new FPS front, which suggests that the project is in its very early stages. In all likelihood, it really is just a concept floating around in Romero's head at this point.

In the more immediate future, Romero will doubtless be focused on Empire of Sin rather than whatever FPS he's cooking up. If it's flown under your radar until now, Empire of Sin is a promising-looking, gangster-flavoured real-time simulation RPG that's expected to arrive next year.

As for the DOOM franchise, we can expect id Software's DOOM Eternal on March 20th, 2020. The FPS was originally supposed to arrive this month, on November 22nd, but it was not to be. A cruel twist of fate (and the need for some extra polish) meant that the title needed to be pushed back a few months.

Bethesda and id Software assured fans that the delay was the best way to live up to the "standards of speed and polish" held by both companies. They believe that in the end, DOOM Eternal will be worth the extra wait.
