Face Off Against Darth Vader In A Virtual Reality Lightsaber Duel
Lucasfilm is getting ready to spill the beans on the first episode of Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series at the upcoming Star Wars Celebration. The project's directors are taking part in a panel discussing the various technological challenges the game presented, chief among them lightsaber battles.
First revealed in September last year, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is a three-episode run set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Details besides that have been sparse, the teaser trailer revealed that we would be visiting Vader's castle on the lava-world Mustafar and that we'd get our hands on a lightsaber, but not much more besides.
While we knew that the game would feature lightsabers, a duel hadn't been confirmed. And, considering the challenges of making melee combat in virtual reality, it wasn't a sure thing. While games like Beat Saber have shown how much fun it can be to smack incoming objects with a sword, it's different to actually duel with another character - in reality, your sword would clash against an opponents in a fight, but in VR there's nothing to stop your swing. How do you get a player to follow the physical rules of a sword fight against a virtual enemy?
The panel is going to be livestreamed on the Star Wars YouTube channel on Friday at 7.30pm in the UK. The speakers are writer David S. Goyer (who also wrote the three Nolan Batman films), director Ben Snow, narrative designer Mohen Leo, Lucasfilm Story Group creative executive Matt Martin, and Oculus' head of media for AR/VR experiences Colum Slevin. They'll talk about the game's story, how it fits into the wider Star Wars universe, and what you'll get up to in the first episode.
