George R R Martin Might Be Working With Dark Souls’ Developer

There's a rumour that George R R Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, is working with Dark Souls developer From Software on a new game. Apparently it will be a little like Breath of the Wild in its structure, in that you'll arrive in the world and be free to visit multiple kingdoms from the off and battle the bosses that rule over the regions. While this rumour is a little thin on the ground, I think there might be some truth to it - though, it might be a case of mistaken identity.

The rumour comes from a video by Spawn Wave, in which he begins by saying we know From Software is working on two unannounced titles and that we're likely to hear about one in the near future, considering Sekiro is now out the team has no other publicly announced titles.

Spawn Wave has teamed up with Liam Robertson, another YouTuber who focuses on uncovering lost games and scoops for DidYouKnowGaming. Apparently, the two have heard a rumour that From Software is working on an open world game where you arrive in a world split into regions. Each region is governed by a prince who is a master of a particular ability. Once you kill the prince of that region you absorb the ability and are able to use it to access more of the world.

And, apparently, George R R Martin is working on the game, helping to fill out the world and define its backstory.

The main question is, how believable is this rumour? Surprisingly, it's kind of believable.

Back in January last year, in an interview with Glixel (now unavailable, but readable through The Wayback Machine), Ty Franck, one half of the duo who write The Expanse novels under the pen name James SA Corey, said that he had worked with From Software on a game he couldn't talk about:

What about Dark Souls? If you like Darkest Dungeon, you may have a predilection for it.

Yeah, I actually have done some work with From Software so... I'm, like, writing stuff for them, so I'm pretty familiar with the Dark Souls franchise.

You're working with them now, or you've done work for them in the past?

I've done that in the past. It's all under NDA and stuff, but, yeah.

Okay, enough said. We can't wait for Space Souls...

I can guarantee you it is not that.

However, that game wasn't Sekiro. At least, Ty Franck doesn't appear in Sekiro's credits. So, we can assume that he worked on one of the two titles that have yet to be announced.

Now, Franck has a long history with George R R Martin, as he once worked as the Game of Thrones author's assistant. The two still work together and have projects that overlap. Franck worked as the story consultant on Telltale's Game of Throne's series, in place of Martin himself, for instance.

So, it could be Franck brought Martin in to work on the game with From Software. That's the optimistic view on this rumour.

Another possibility, however, is that this is a case of mistaken identity. That someone has confused Franck for Martin because of their close ties, and assumed they're the same person.
